About the Alde Feanen

A special nature reserve full of life

De Alde Feanen is one of the 23 National Parks in the Netherlands; and not without reason. De Alde Feanen National Park is a unique area with a rich natural and cultural history, formed from peat excavation.

In this more than 4,000-hectare lowland peat marsh, around 450 plant species can be found and over 100 bird species breed here, including the white-tailed eagle. The area lies in the heart of Fryslân, surrounded by several picturesque villages and not far from Leeuwarden, Drachten and Heerenveen.

A landscape that continues to surprise

The landscape in De Alde Feanen is varied: peat pools, reed beds, rough vegetation, shrubs and marsh forests shape the view. Here you can walk, cycle, sail and enjoy the nature, the birds and the tranquility.
This is also where the foundation for knowledge about nature is passed on to children — by older generations who let them experience what nature is and how to treat it with care.

Tourists celebrate unforgettable holidays here. And the passer-by who happens to visit? They are sure to return someday — just like the thousands of migratory birds that find their way back here every year.

Welcome to National Park De Alde Feanen!
